Sidebar buttons are an easy way to beef up your blog as well as a good way to endorse or promote a website that you like. For example, I run a blog called The Mama List and I wanted to add a link to The Soft Landing Baby because I think it’s a useful website that’s relevant to my content. Plus it looks better than just having a plain old link. Below are all the steps you’ll need to successfully create a new look for your sidebars.
Below is the logo I’d like to put in my sidebar, circled in red. I found this on The Soft Landing Baby website.
1. The first thing you would do is make sure it’s okay to copy their image and link to them (it’s normally just fine). To download the image right click and select “save as.” Save to desktop or desktop folder for easy access.
2. Next, you’re going to act as if you’re starting a new post. So choose “add new” from your Dashboard on the left of your admin page (click to enlarge image).
3. Click on the “add an image” icon and upload the desired image into post.
4. Click “select files“ and locate the image you’ll be using. If you want your image to link to a website, make sure you include the link url. I use “full size image” but you may have to play around with the size if you want it smaller. Also this is where you insert the title that you want people to see when they hover over the image. Once you have it filled out, click “insert into post.”
5. The HTML code will show up in your new post (to see the code, be sure to click on the HTML tab - not the Visual Tab). If you have linked to another site and you want a new tab to open when someone clicks on the image, make sure to insert: target=”_blank” at the end of the url.
6. Once you have the code in your new post you can preview to make sure the appearance is correct and it’s opening in a new tab. In order to preview you’ll need to “save draft” first.
7. If everything looks good and the size is correct, highlight and copy the HTML code.
8. Select “Widgets” under your Appearance tab on the left of your screen.
9. Under “Current Widgets” select right or left sidebar - wherever you want your image to appear - and then “Show.”
10. Scroll down to the bottom of the screen, find where it says “Text” and click “Add.”
11. Click on “edit” for the new Text button you just added.
12. Paste the HTML code into text box.
13. Save changes
14. Go to “edit” under your “Posts” Button and delete the draft that you created.
Simply follow the above steps each time you want to add a new button. You can see the finished product on my blog below. I currently have two buttons on the left and one on the right.
That’s it! If you get stuck, please leave a comment and I’ll get back to you as soon as I can. Good luck!

Cool, I figured out how to do that, Thanks,
But one question, how do you get the buttons on the left and the right hand side.
Send me a email ASAP, I would appreciate that,
The time is 2:12pm Eastern on Thursday.
I was able to insert picture and a opt-in form.
Now I want to do that on the right hand side, but I want to do that on left hand side as well.
I tried to subscribe, but it says invalid Rss Feed, I put, http://feeds2.feedburner.com/TYsTIPS.
But no deals,
Let me know,
Thanks,
Ray.
I just checked back today April 20, 2009 Monday at 7:58am, I subscribed to the Rss Feeds which I could not get to work before for some reason.
Anyway, I would like to know the same question I asked:
But one question, how do you get the buttons on the left and the right hand side.
I have the buttons on the right, how do you get them to work on the left?
Let me know, I will look for further updates on my Rss Reader, My Yahoo, to see if anyone answered this question,
thanks,
Ray,
and Click on my Name
and leave a comment on my Blog,
Take care.
Hi Ray, sorry for the delay in getting back to your previous comments. Just to be sure I understand, you were able to subscribe to the feed, correct?
As far as the left vs right side, the image in step 9 shows where you have to click to change between the left and right sidebar. All the rest of the steps remain the same, regardless of which side you’re adding the image/button to.
I hope that makes sense.
Thanks!
Tyler

Yes, I was, thanks alot.
This is weird, I look at your Step 9, and look at mine, Yours says Left Sidebar,
Mine says, Sidebar1 and Sidebar 2
Doesn’t say left and right, So I don’t know what the problem is.
Let me know, if you have a solution to this problem,
Thanks,
Ray.
THANK YOU!! I have read SO many posts on how to do this…and yours worked!! Yay!
No Problem NYNancy, Glad we could help!
@Ray, your left sidebar is probably Sidebar1, and your right is probably Sidebar2, but this can always be changed if you get it wrong the first time.
Good luck!
Thanks! You described it very simply and it worked….easy for computer illiterates like me to follow.
This worked perfectly! Thank you so, so much!!
I think this is fabulous. Thank you so much for thinking of helping us non tech wizards who are learning. I was wondering if you could help me with adding an opt in from aweber. I have created it and want to add it to the right hand side of my website. I have the HTML script and don’t know where to add it. Thank you.
Thank you so much for breaking this down!
Thank You so so so much! I finally have an easy explanation of adding buttons to my blog. Can’t thank You enough!
i love you! i have been trying to do this the hard way to NO AVAIl!!!!!!thanks!!!
I’ll gear this review to 2 types of people: current Zune owners who are considering an upgrade, and people trying to decide between a Zune and an iPod. (There are other players worth considering out there, like the Sony Walkman X, but I hope this gives you enough info to make an informed decision of the Zune vs players other than the iPod line as well.)
This is great; very simple solution that makes a site look much better. Thanks for putting this up!
How to add icon in the left of sidebar title?
thank you very much for this post! it’s very helpful!
